Montfrin
Located between the Rhône and Gardon rivers, Monfrin, " Monsferinus " meaning 'mount abounding in game' in Latin, enjoys a rich heritage. The village has been marked by the presence of the Knights Templar, the Knights of St. Jean of Jerusalem and the Black Penitents; it also boasts rich facades of noblemen's houses who hosted royal visitors coming to take the reputed waters of Montfrin.
Today its economic activity is above all wine making (Costières, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Côtes du Rhône); it also has rich bull sports traditions.
Sightseeing:
- Romanesque church: tympanum depicting the Virgin with child, registered cornices, sculpted column heads...
- Lodge of the knights of Saint Jean,
- The Château, listed as an historic monument,
- Renaissance facades,
- Chapel of the Black Penitents,
- Remains of the ramparts,
- Rectangular 12th century dungeon on a Roman foundation,
- View over the village, church, 'Saracen' towers and the Gardon from the Rue des Rochers.
Don't miss:
- La Baume: a site dug out of the rock with some 76 bee hives, making it the largest apiary in France,
- The weekly market on Tuesday mornings,
- The banks of the Gardon,
- The village festival.
